Airbnb
Airbnb, the global leader in home hospitality, promotes an authentic and sustainable way of traveling. Together with its host community, the company launched Love Sustainability, an initiative to encourage responsible tourism through mindful hospitality.
The goal? To show that home hospitality can make a difference for a more sustainable world, without overhauling your lifestyle: small changes to daily routines are enough to generate, when combined, a significant positive impact.
The context
Sustainable tourism is a growing trend: more and more travelers are looking for accommodations that reflect their environmental values. Airbnb hosts, who care deeply about this topic, wanted to:
- Effectively communicate their sustainable choices to guests
- Educate guests about responsible behavior during their stay
- Respond to the growing demand for conscious tourism
- Have technical and scientific support to validate their green practices
The Airbnb Love Sustainability Team had gathered numerous best practices from the community, but a clear, scientifically validated structure that could be easily communicated to both hosts and travelers was missing.
The objectives
Circularity's contribution
We organized themed workshops with the host community to select, validate, and refine the sustainability best practices collected by the Love Sustainability team.
The initiatives were grouped into 5 categories:
- sustainable mobility
- waste sorting
- energy saving
- water saving and responsible choices
The result is a freely downloadable decalogue that provides hosts with practical tips for reducing the environmental impact of their accommodations, along with awareness tools to encourage guests to enjoy more conscious stays.
Each host can personalize their own decalogue by selecting the practices actually applied in their home, print it, and share it with travelers through the listing with the note "this home participates in the Love Sustainability project".
The results
The Love Sustainability project generated tangible impact on three levels:
-
For hosts: awareness about environmental sustainability and immediate operational tools to manage homes responsibly.
-
For guests: a response to the growing demand for sustainable tourism and education toward mindful behaviors during travel.
-
For communication: visibility for hosts who want to be found by green travelers and competitive differentiation in the market through an effective, validated communication approach.
