Quantifying emissions to support the decarbonisation plan and new product development

Product Carbon Footprint and Organisation GHG Inventory for the Pharma Sector.

Pharmaceutical

F.I.S. (Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici)

F.I.S. is a heavyweight in pharmaceutical chemistry, specialising in the production of active ingredients for the world's leading multinational companies in the sector.

Long driven by research, the company integrates scientific innovation with a growing focus on the sustainability of chemical processes.

The context

In the pharmaceutical sector, sustainability plays out on particular ground — halfway between commodity chemistry and end consumers: across the supply chain, all players share the pressure of decarbonisation, each facing different implications depending on their position in the value chain.

Production scale and process complexity make the challenge twofold: organising a growing volume of data to build a credible decarbonisation roadmap while, at the same time, communicating the carbon footprint of each product to customers with full transparency. Precision is essential — the same precision applied to drug formulation, now directed at emissions calculation.

FIS chose to get ahead of the curve: a rigorous analysis of its emissions, serving as the foundation for a reduction plan aligned with international climate agreements and for measuring the carbon footprint of its products.

The objectives

To measure the organisation's carbon footprint according to recognised standards (GHG Protocol), with a level of detail that makes full use of available data.

To develop a systematic calculation tool for product carbon footprint (in accordance with ISO 14067) and to train an internal resource to operate it independently.

Circularity's approach

Circularity provided FIS with technical and methodological support structured around three workstreams:

1

Drafting of the GHG inventory covering the 2023–2025 three-year period, including support in defining and refining internal procedures for primary data collection, and ongoing dialogue on the modelling logic applied.

2

Support in integrating the findings from the inventory into the company's decarbonisation plan, with hands-on assistance through the submission and validation process for the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

3

Development of a tool for calculating product carbon footprint, built on a systematic and scalable approach designed for independent use by the company's internal team.

The results

FIS has strengthened its position as a responsible and forward-thinking supplier in the global pharma landscape:

  • Robust Climate Strategy: In-depth, well-organised data to inform strategic decision-making.

  • Alignment with Global Targets: Positioning consistent with SBTi criteria and the requirements of major pharmaceutical groups.

  • Internal product carbon footprint calculation tool and transfer of knowledge on calculation methodologies and approaches.
