Mapping emission hotspots to integrate climate into industrial processes and R&D

Carbon Footprint and Climate Roadmap for the Pharma Sector.
Pharmaceutical

F.I.S. (Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici)

F.I.S. is a giant in pharmaceutical chemistry, specializing in the production of active ingredients for the leading multinationals in the sector.

Always research-oriented, the company combines scientific innovation with a growing focus on the sustainability of its chemical processes.

The context

The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the Science Based Targets.

FIS has chosen to position itself at the forefront of this change, launching a rigorous analysis of its emissions in order to define a reduction plan aligned with international climate agreements.

The objectives

To scientifically measure the carbon footprint (ISO 14064) and structure a decarbonization roadmap that supports the transition toward lower-impact production models.

Circularity's intervention

We provided FIS with the technical and methodological support needed for precision carbon management:

1

Scope 1-2-3 Emissions Audit: We analyzed the entire operational perimeter for the years 2019 to 2023, quantifying direct emissions and those generated along the chemical supply chain.

2

Industrial Hotspot Mapping: We identified the production and logistics processes with the greatest impact, providing management with a clear picture of intervention priorities.

3

Definition of the Climate Roadmap: We worked on the development of a strategic reduction plan, integrating climate objectives into the company's Research and Development activities.

The results

FIS has consolidated its role as a responsible and innovative supplier in the global pharma landscape:
  • Scientific Climate Strategy: Reliable, trackable data to guide future investments.

  • Alignment with Global Targets: Positioning consistent with SBTi criteria and the requirements of major pharmaceutical groups.

  • Supply Chain Control: Greater visibility and ability to influence the indirect impacts of production.
