Italferr
Italferr, a company of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, represents the excellence of Italian infrastructure engineering.
With over 30 years of experience, it works on major projects involving High Speed rail, metropolitan transport, roads, ports and stations, both in Italy and abroad.
It covers the entire cycle: design, procurement, works supervision, testing, commissioning, project management and know-how transfer.
The context
The linear model of production and consumption has reached its limits.
The circular economy offers an alternative: reusing materials in successive production cycles, minimizing waste and maximizing value.
For the infrastructure sector, this means radically rethinking the management of excavation materials, turning waste into resources and replacing quarry sourcing with internal recovery.
The objectives
Create a digital solution to manage excavated soil and rock (TRS) in a circular way: finding productive destinations that reuse the excavated material in place of virgin resources, avoiding landfill and waste. Turning waste into a valuable by-product.
Circularity's contribution
We supported Italferr in the Open Italy Elis program by developing the Proof of Concept of the Terre Circolari platform.
FLOW MAPPING
-
Analysis of the TRS generated on railway construction sites.
-
Identification of reuse opportunities.
TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
-
A digital platform that matches supply and demand of by-products.
-
A national database of users and recovery facilities, constantly updated.
MATCHING ALGORITHM
-
Automatic selection of the optimal recipients based on distance, receiving capacity and material compatibility.
- Drastic reduction of search and contact times.
- Validation on real construction sites.
- Logistics optimization to minimize transport and CO₂.
The results
-
Full Digitalization: TRS management has shifted from manual to digital, with search times reduced by 80%.
-
Tangible Circularity: Tons of excavated material reintegrated into production cycles, replacing virgin resources.
-
Reduced Environmental Impact: Less landfill disposal, less transport, fewer CO₂ emissions.
-
Scalability: The Terre Circolari platform can now be replicated across all FS Group construction sites, multiplying the positive impact.
