Smape
Smape is an oil & gas operator active through multiple sites and subsidiaries with differentiated activities. In a sector of high emissions intensity and under growing scrutiny from stakeholders, financial institutions and the supply chain, the ability to measure and report emissions in a structured and certified way has become an enabling requirement for operating with credibility in the market.
The context
Smape operated through an articulated structure of sites and subsidiaries, each with different activities and emissions profiles. The company wanted to gain adequate oversight of its climate impact — to respond in a structured way to supply chain requirements and to have a clear picture of where the most relevant emissions were concentrated — but lacked a reliable, accurate and time-comparable reporting system.
The need was to build a detailed emissions inventory capable of tracking the performance of individual sites across the same activities, identifying which business types generated the greatest impact, and communicating transparently with all relevant stakeholders.
The objectives
To build a complete and accurate emissions inventory according to the GHG Protocol methodology and ISO 14064 standard, with detailed reporting for individual sites and subsidiaries, in order to monitor emissions performance over time and communicate the commitment towards responsible emissions management.
Circularity's contribution
Circularity adopted a structured approach to analyse the emissions produced by the organisation's various sites over the period 2022–2025, following the ISO 14064 methodology. The work was articulated across multiple phases:
The work was structured in 3 phases:
Emissions mapping and inventory
A complete GHG inventory was built for all group sites and subsidiaries, with granular reporting that allows the performance of individual entities to be compared across the same activities. The analysis covered the entire operational perimeter, identifying the relevant emissions sources for each business type and providing the company with a structured and comparable view of its climate profile.
Emissions hotspot identification
Building on the inventory, the activities and sites of greatest emissions intensity were identified, providing the company with a clear hierarchy of priorities on which to focus management and reduction actions. An analysis that made it possible to distinguish the contribution of different business types and to orient operational choices towards more conscious emissions management.
ISO 14064 certification
For the 2024 and 2025 reporting years, the emissions inventory was submitted to third-party verification with the issuance of ISO 14064 certification, ensuring the highest level of reliability and credibility of the data towards external stakeholders. A formal recognition that strengthens Smape's ability to communicate its commitment to emissions management in a transparent and defensible way.
The results
Smape now has a concrete tool for monitoring and managing its emissions profile. The complete GHG inventory according to the ISO 14064 standard provides detailed reporting for individual sites and subsidiaries, with clear identification of the highest-impact activities. Third-party certification for 2024 and 2025 guarantees the credibility of the data and strengthens the company's ability to communicate transparently and authoritatively with clients, partners and financial institutions in the oil & gas supply chain.
