Tekni-Plex Gallazzi
Tekni-Plex Gallazzi is a globally integrated company specialising in the development and production of innovative packaging materials for the pharmaceutical, food, household and industrial markets. The Tradate production site — one of two in Italy — is dedicated to the production of PVC blisters for the pharmaceutical sector, a highly regulated market in which the environmental credibility of suppliers has become an increasingly relevant selection factor.
The context
In the years prior to 2021, Tekni-Plex Gallazzi had already undertaken significant energy efficiency improvements. What was missing was a tool capable of measuring the site's carbon footprint in a structured way and of quantitatively documenting the benefits already achieved. The company had no complete emissions profile across Scope 1, 2 and 3, nor a historical analysis capable of showing how emissions had evolved over time.
The need was twofold: on one hand, to build a rigorous measurement framework compliant with international standards; on the other, to give value to the improvement journey already undertaken — transforming technical data into communicable evidence for clients and stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector.
The objectives
To measure the carbon footprint of the Tradate production site for the period 2019–2021, quantify the environmental benefits derived from energy efficiency measures already implemented, and achieve Carbon Neutrality by the end of 2021.
Circularity's contribution
Circularity built the pathway to Carbon Neutrality starting from a complete and historically structured emissions measurement.
Carbon Footprint analysis (GHG Protocol)
Applying the GHG Protocol standard, all major emissions sources at the Tradate production site were mapped. Scope 1 direct emissions — linked to fuel consumption in blister production processes — were precisely quantified, as were Scope 2 indirect emissions from electricity purchases for the site's machinery and utilities. On the Scope 3 front, emissions across the value chain were mapped, including transport, waste management and material procurement, based on strategic choices and corporate policies with significant environmental impact.
Historical emissions profile 2019–2021
The emissions trend over the three-year period was reconstructed, quantitatively evidencing the environmental and economic benefits already achieved through the efficiency improvements carried out in previous years. An analysis that transformed actions already taken into measurable, documented evidence.
Reduction and offsetting plan
Building on the emissions profile, Circularity defined guidelines for the implementation of internal reduction actions — including the purchase of certified green energy and optimised waste management — and for the offsetting of residual emissions, bringing the site to Carbon Neutrality by the end of 2021.
The results
At the conclusion of the process, Tekni-Plex Gallazzi has a complete and structured emissions profile for the Tradate site, with quantitative evidence of the benefits already achieved through the 2019–2020 efficiency improvements.
The site obtained certified Carbon Neutrality for 2021 through a structured plan of internal reduction and residual emissions offsetting, with the issuance of the Circularity Neutrality Certificate. The process also identified further opportunities for energy efficiency and waste management optimisation, with measurable benefits both environmentally and economically. On the competitive front, Tekni-Plex Gallazzi is now positioned as a carbon neutral supplier of pharmaceutical PVC blisters in a market where supplier sustainability is increasingly a strategic selection criterion.
