Tekni-Plex Gallazzi
Tekni-Plex Gallazzi is a globally integrated company that develops and produces innovative packaging materials and medical compounds for the medical, pharmaceutical, personal care, household, industrial, food and beverage markets.
The Tradate production site (one of two in Italy) specializes in the production of PVC blisters for the pharmaceutical sector.
In previous years, the company had already undertaken energy efficiency initiatives with positive environmental and economic impacts.
The context
Tekni-Plex Gallazzi had already implemented energy efficiency measures in the years prior to 2021, but it did not have a structured measurement of its carbon impact or quantitative evidence of the environmental and economic benefits achieved.
The company wanted to undertake a formal Carbon Neutrality journey that would not be limited to recent emissions, but would also include historical analysis to document the results already achieved.
However, it lacked a complete emissions profile (Scope 1, 2, 3) and a structured strategy for reducing and offsetting residual emissions in order to achieve carbon neutrality.
The objectives
To measure the historical (2019-2020) and recent corporate carbon footprint of the Tradate production site, define a Carbon Management Plan with reduction and efficiency actions, and achieve certified Carbon Neutrality by the end of 2021.
Circularity's contribution
We built the path to carbon neutrality starting from a complete measurement of historical and current emissions all the way to final certification.
Corporate LCA study according to the GHG Protocol: we applied the Life Cycle Assessment methodology at a corporate level, following GHG Protocol standards, to map all emission sources at the PVC pharmaceutical blister production site.
Scope 1 emissions calculation: we quantified direct emissions from production cycles arising from fuel use (natural gas) in blister manufacturing processes.
Scope 2 emissions calculation: we measured indirect emissions from the purchase of electricity used to power production machinery and utilities at the Tradate site.
Historical 2019-2020 emissions profile: we reconstructed the trend of emissions over the two-year period to quantitatively highlight the environmental and economic benefits already obtained from previous efficiency improvements.
The results
-
Complete emissions profile: Tekni-Plex Gallazzi obtained a detailed mapping of all Scope 1, 2, 3 emissions at the Tradate production site, with quantitative evidence of the benefits already achieved from the 2019-2020 efficiency measures.
-
Certified Carbon Neutrality 2021: carbon neutrality achieved by the end of 2021 through a structured plan of internal reduction and offsetting of residual emissions, with the issuing of the Circularity Neutrality Certificate.
-
Cost and resource optimization: identified opportunities for energy efficiency, consumption reduction and optimized waste management with measurable economic as well as environmental benefits.
-
Competitive differentiation in the pharmaceutical sector: positioning as a carbon neutral supplier of PVC pharmaceutical blisters in a market increasingly attentive to the sustainability and environmental responsibility of its suppliers.
