Andriani
Andriani SpA is one of the key players in the innovation food sector in Italy, with a facility entirely dedicated to gluten free production.
The company develops gluten free pasta from alternative ingredients such as wholegrain rice, corn, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, lentils and peas, and since 2016 it also produces flour mixes and preparations for sweet and savory baking.
The context
The food industry has seen growing attention toward the sustainability of raw materials as an element of vital importance.
For a company operating in this field, it is essential to integrate sustainable practices across every stage of the production chain, from the sourcing of raw materials to the valorization and disposal of waste.
The objectives
Circularity's contribution
In 2019 we supported Andriani in formalizing its first Strategic Sustainability Plan.
The streamlining of ongoing projects and the identification of key stakeholders, as well as the material aspects on which the company should focus its efforts in the coming years, kicked off the process of drafting a three year plan with specific and measurable objectives, organized by priority of intervention.
ZERO FOOD WASTE: REDUCING FOOD WASTE
Andriani SpA has incorporated into its Strategic Sustainability Plan measures aimed at reducing food waste in line with the "zero waste challenge" of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Actions at the source:
-
Reduce waste production per kg of product
-
Create a monitoring and traceability system for waste sorted by type, with the goal of increasing recovery capacity.
Actions upstream of the production cycle:
-
Define criteria for reducing raw materials in recipes.
-
Design products with a number of ingredients selected based on their actual nutritional contribution.
-
Promote the development of single ingredient recipes.
Energy valorization:
-
Introduction of plants for the energy valorization of process waste and by-products.
-
What cannot be used to produce sustainable packaging material may feed biomass boilers and bio-methane co-generators for the production of renewable energy by 2023.
CARBON NEUTRALITY
The neutralization of Andriani SpA's Carbon Footprint is based on the management of its own energy sources and the related direct emissions into the atmosphere.
The Strategic Plan includes:
- Sustainable internal mobility policy
- Tree planting and reforestation initiatives in collaboration with local Park Authorities
Energy management:
- The electricity used at the production plant already comes from renewable sources
- 2020 goal: move to self-production of energy through the launch of the 800 kWe trigeneration plant designed by Gruppo Innovatec, a partner of Circularity
- Feasibility study for the development of additional renewable capacity through the installation of a photovoltaic system on the buildings' rooftops (a target achievable within the first half of 2021)
Offsetting:
- Participation in the "Gas 100% Compensa CO₂" program, which involves a commitment to offset CO₂ emissions caused by the use of natural gas, through the co-financing of projects certified by third party bodies and supported by institutional entities such as NGOs and international associations
- The projects generate CO₂ credits resulting in "Gold Standard" or "VCS" VER certificates, internationally recognized standards
Emissions offsetting:
- Participation in the "Gas 100% Compensa CO₂" program, with co-financing of "Gold Standard" or "VCS" VER certified projects, internationally recognized
Local initiatives:
- Sustainable internal mobility policy
- Tree planting and reforestation projects in collaboration with local Park Authorities
The results
Andriani has transformed waste and energy management from an operational issue into a strategic lever, gaining economic benefits from resource valorization and significantly reducing environmental impact.
Performance data:
-
-12.74% electricity consumption compared to 2019
-
3,653 tCO₂ avoided thanks to the purchase of electricity from renewable sources
-
-4.5% total emissions per ton of product compared to 2019
Turn surplus into new preparations
With Circularity by your side, it's easier.
