Bianchi Industry
Founded in 1959, Bianchi Industry is a global leader in the vending and professional coffee machine market. With over sixty years of history, the company has successfully combined manufacturing excellence and technological innovation, becoming a worldwide reference point for out-of-home coffee culture.
Its vending machines are present in highly competitive international markets, where product quality and brand credibility are increasingly measured also in terms of environmental responsibility.
The context
In a market rapidly evolving towards circular economy models and "Product-as-a-Service" logic, sustainability is no longer simply a stated value: it is a measurable requirement, one that features in tender criteria, in the procurement policies of major clients and in the expectations of end consumers.
Bianchi Industry chose to go beyond the analysis of energy consumption during use alone — the most immediate and visible aspect of a vending machine's impact — to pursue a more comprehensive and scientifically grounded assessment. The challenge was to include in the analysis the entire product lifecycle: the materials used, the production and assembly processes, and the fate of the machine at end of life. A cradle-to-grave approach that transforms sustainability from narrative into verifiable data.
The objectives
To obtain a rigorous scientific assessment through an LCA study, in order to guide the eco-design of future vending machine models.
Circularity's intervention
Circularity's technical team applied the ISO 14040/44 methodology following a cradle-to-grave approach:
Detailed Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)
The machines were studied in every individual material and plastic component, analysing the energy and resource flows required for manufacturing and assembly.
Eco-design and Green Procurement support
Based on the results, targeted interventions were recommended to encourage the selection of recycled or lower-impact materials across the entire lifecycle, in order to reduce the product's overall environmental footprint.
Support for Eco-Design and Green Procurement: Based on the results, we suggested actions to improve the repairability of the machines and the selection of recyclable or lower-impact materials, in order to reduce the overall footprint of the product.
The results
Bianchi Industry has transformed a technical analysis into a powerful eco-design and innovation tool. The product LCA has become a decisive competitive advantage for participation in public and private tenders. The study identified margins for improvement in resource optimisation during the production phase, while new products are now designed starting from a scientifically based environmental impact analysis.
-
Product LCA: a decisive competitive advantage for participating in public and private tenders.
-
Production efficiency: identification of improvement margins for optimising resources used during the production phase.
-
Data-driven innovation: new products are designed building on a scientifically based environmental impact analysis.
From 2025, the collaboration between Bianchi Industry and Circularity has expanded to include the drafting of the Sustainability Report and the measurement of the company's carbon footprint.
