Lavazza

Lavazza is an Italian icon in the world of coffee. Founded in 1895 in Turin by Luigi Lavazza, the company has built its reputation on quality, innovation and a passion for excellence.

In 2021, Lavazza outlined its five-year strategic plan for 2022-2026, placing economic, social and environmental sustainability at the heart of its vision. Particular attention has been devoted to the circular economy, a cornerstone for restructuring production systems and achieving the ambitious goals of the Roadmap to Zero. Lavazza doesn't just talk about sustainability: it measures it, improves it, certifies it.

The context

Lavazza had already taken concrete actions toward circularity, but it lacked a tool to objectively and verifiably measure the level of implementation of circular economy principles within the organization.

The need was to quantify circularity using a recognized methodology, in order to turn efforts into concrete data and identify areas for improvement.

The objectives

Measuring the company's Level of Circularity according to the UNI/TS 11820:2022 standard.

Circularity's contribution

The project with Lavazza involved measuring circularity through a Circularity Assessment, applying UNI/TS 11820:2022 for the first time in Italy.

1
Defining the scope, which included four strategic plants (Turin Nuvola, Gattinara, Settimo Torinese and Pozzilli), with a focus on product operations as required by the standard.
2
Selecting indicators by identifying 44 applicable indicators, divided into the 6 categories set out in the standard: material resources, energy and water resources, waste production and emissions, logistics, products and services, governance and sustainability.
3
Collecting data and calculating the level of circularity by analyzing company performance against the selected indicators, with reference to the year 2022, to deliver a precise and certifiable measurement.

The results

For the first time, Lavazza obtained an objective and certifiable measurement of its Level of Circularity, according to the UNI/TS 11820:2022 standard.

This result allowed the company to give concrete value to the efforts made over the years on circularity, identify the strategic areas to invest in going forward and give new momentum to its corporate strategy toward the Roadmap to Zero.

  • First certified measurement of circularity according to UNI/TS 11820:2022
  • Analysis across 44 indicators distributed in 6 strategic categories
  • A solid foundation for setting new circular economy targets
