From pesto to decarbonization: Naturello's integrated ESG strategy

Naturello

Naturello is a company in the agri-food sector whose roots lie in the experience the Buratti Family has gained in agricultural cultivation through the activities carried out, since the beginning of the last century, in the flourishing area of the Colli Berici.


Building on this experience and care in cultivating and processing this raw material, Naturello has moved into the production of one of the most internationally appreciated Italian specialities: Pesto alla Genovese.


Today, Naturello is structured to supply a wide range of Pesto alla Genovese, Pesto Rosso and other fresh or frozen sauces all over the world.

The context

Naturello had already taken concrete steps to reduce its environmental impact: the installation of photovoltaic panels for energy self sufficiency and advanced heat recovery technologies are tangible examples.


But the company wanted to take a step up: moving from one off initiatives to an organic 360 degree decarbonisation and sustainability strategy, integrating ESG topics into daily management and credibly and transparently communicating its commitment to all stakeholders.

The objectives

Achieving carbon neutrality through a structured decarbonisation plan and integrating ESG topics into the company's organisation through a Strategic Sustainability Plan and a Sustainability Report compliant with the GRI Standards.

PHASE 1: Carbon Footprint Measurement

 

We mapped the company's emissions according to the GHG Protocol across three levels:

 

  • Scope 1 direct emissions
  • Scope 2 from purchased energy
  • Scope 3 other indirect emissions

Result: precise identification of critical areas and definition of intervention priorities.

Decarbonisation Plan We built a tailor made plan aimed at zeroing direct emissions and drastically reducing supply chain emissions, energy efficiency and heat recovery, product eco-design, selection of lower impact raw materials

Overall Sustainability Strategy. To integrate ESG topics systematically, we developed two complementary projects based on the GRI Standards: Strategic Sustainability Plan, involving management in defining concrete ESG initiatives to be implemented over the three year period, integrating environment, social and governance into the company strategy. Sustainability Report, transparently reporting on relevant topics to communicate values, commitments and concrete results to stakeholders, differentiating the company on the market.

Every action was tailored to the specific features of each production site, ensuring strategic consistency and operational flexibility.

The results

Through a structured decarbonisation and ESG reporting journey, Naturello achieved:

  • Complete mapping of the company's Carbon Footprint (Scope 1, 2, 3) according to the GHG Protocol, with precise identification of critical areas
  • Tailor made decarbonisation plan aimed at zeroing direct emissions and reducing supply chain emissions
  • Three year Strategic Sustainability Plan with ESG initiatives integrated into management
  • GRI Standards Sustainability Report published to communicate transparency and concrete commitment to stakeholders
