Pelliconi's aluminium residues become by-products to feed back into production

By-product qualification and Circular materials management
Packaging EN

Pelliconi & C.

Pelliconi & C. is a global leader in the production of crown caps and metal and plastic closures for the bottling industry.

Its global sales and distribution network relies on four foreign subsidiaries that have enabled the group to be recognized as one of the world's largest producers and exporters of crown caps.

Each year the group recycles more than 97% of its production waste and has launched numerous projects to combat climate change, support local and international communities, and ensure stability and safety in the workplace for its employees.

The context

Pelliconi & C. had already achieved excellent recycling performance (over 97% of waste), but wanted to explore new opportunities to add value to certain production residues.

To maximize the value of these materials and prevent them from being classified as waste, the company needed specialized technical and regulatory support: verifying compliance with the legal requirements for by-product qualification, preparing the necessary administrative documentation, and managing registration with the Chamber of Commerce.

The objectives

To qualify production waste as by-products under art. 184-bis of Legislative Decree 152/2006 and complete the administrative procedure for registration with the Chamber of Commerce.

Circularity's intervention

We guided Pelliconi & C. through a structured technical and regulatory path organized into 3 consecutive phases:

1
Technical and administrative feasibility analysis: Assessment of the possibility of identifying production waste as by-products, verifying compliance with the regulatory criteria set out by art. 184-bis of Legislative Decree 152/2006 and Decree No. 264 of October 13, 2016.

2

Preparation of administrative paperwork: Drafting of the by-product technical sheet meeting all the conditions required by the regulations:

  • The substance originates from a production process of which it is an integral part and whose primary purpose is not the production of that substance

  • The use of the substance in the course of the same or a subsequent production process by the producer or by third parties is certain

  • The substance can be used directly without any further treatment other than normal industrial practice

  • The further use is lawful and meets all requirements regarding products and the protection of health and the environment

3
Identification of the destination: Identification of the destination facility or activity for the by-product to be reused as a partial replacement for raw materials in a new production cycle.

Technical focus: aluminum as a circular material

Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled infinitely, retaining all of its characteristics. Through recycling and melting, it can be reused to produce new raw material without losing quality.
Recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy required to produce it from ore: extracting 1 kg of aluminum from bauxite requires 16 kW/h, while obtaining 1 kg of aluminum from already used material requires only 0.4 kW/h.

The results

Thanks to the qualification process, Pelliconi & C.'s aluminum residues have acquired by-product status, moving out of the waste category and fully entering the circuit of productive valorization.

The company has thus expanded the opportunities for the circular management of its materials, strengthening a business model already geared toward sustainability and paving the way for collaborations with new production partners.

  • By-product qualification obtained pursuant to art. 184-bis of Legislative Decree 152/2006

  • Technical sheet drafted with all regulatory requirements

  • Registration completed with the Chamber of Commerce

  • New valorization channels for aluminum residues

  • Reduction in waste classification

  • 95% energy savings thanks to aluminum recycling

  • Consolidation of circular economy performance (>97% recycling)
